Meet Courtney Rebel, Activities Director at Mayacama

At Mayacama, golf is our passion but we also offer an array of area and on-site adventures and activities that the entire family will enjoy.  An incredible amount of thought, preparation and passion goes into these activities led by Activities Director, Courtney Rebel.

We recently asked Courtney to share some insight, as well as some of her local favorites, with us.

What led you to your role as Activities Director at Mayacama?
Before becoming the Activities Director at Mayacama, I was immersed in a variety of positions in the Wellness and Youth industries. My experience ranges from the Director of Fitness at Congressional Country Club, Director of Wellness and Youth at Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club to a Personal Trainer in Golf Fitness, Triathlons and Aquatics.  While in these roles, my teams and I have exceeded members’ expectations through programming, superior customer service and capital projects.  Some of these include designing a state of the art Pilates studio, building a nationwide renowned youth program and creating unforgettable family events. My adventure of life thus far has been all about kids, fitness and wellness and I look forward to continuing my story at Mayacama!

Four of my favorite activities at Mayacama (and why):
1. I am looking forward to the annual Gingerbread Decorating Party.  I have heard wonderful comments about this festive event.  It sounds like a perfect gathering to celebrate the holidays with families, friends, Santa and sweet treats.

2. In the Summer of 2018, we have the 1st Mini Mudder Camp & Race at Mayacama.  We will create an adventure course on property where kids, ages 5-13, will have a muddy good time competing in this unique event.  I can’t wait!

3. To celebrate Valentines Day in 2018, we will be converting the Kids Room into Willie Wonkas Chocolate Factory.  Imagine lickable wallpaper, chocolate painting and other fantastical sweet treats- Wow!

4. In June 2018, we will have the 1st Annual Mayacama 5K & Kids Dash.  The fun run will wind through the hills of the course and property.  It will be an active event for everyone in the family!

What do you think make Mayacama so special to members?
Mayacama is a home away from home. The small membership size allows the staff to get to know every member and family.  I enjoy spending time with the community of families at the Club and all the happy kids.

Favorite part of the Job:
1. I love planning events for Mayacama families!   In my eyes, I have the ultimate dream job where I am able to plan cool events and activities for kids and adults.  Who doesn’t love to plan parties?

2. As a TPI (Titlest) Fitness Professional at Mayacama, I get to spread my passion for Wellness and Fitness to the membership. I love helping members discover their areas for improved mobility and flexibility with a personalized testing system.  We then work together to increase overall health and improve swing mechanics with a custom workout program.  It is fun to help members feel better immediately and see lasting results in a program due to targeting their unique body mechanics.

Share 3 of your favorite Annual Sonoma County events that members and guest’s should attend and why.
1. The Annual Wine & Food Affair is a great way to experience several wineries and a selection of varietals in one weekend.  You will discover favorite wines grown right here in Sonoma County.

2. I also love the World Food Affair in September each year.  Speakers in the food industry come from around the world to present on everything from local heirloom vegetables to how to grow a perfect tomato.  There are also local food vendor with tastings of decedent chocolate and unique superfoods.  It is a great place to see what is up and coming in the food industry!

3. Lastly, I enjoy the Annual concert in the Redwoods at Redwood Armstrong State Park in Guerneville.  Due to the fragile ecosystem, they only host one concert at the outdoor amphitheater each year.  They enlist local bands for the event and light the paths in the Redwood forest with LED lights to create a unique date night experience.

Lightning Round
When not at Mayacama you’ll find me:  Somewhere on an outside adventure; maybe paddle boarding on a lake, surfing a wave or exploring a beautiful Sonoma County trail.

5 things I can’t live without:  Adventures with my little guy Koa (19 months old), nourishing and delicious food, outdoor adventure toys (paddleboard, snowboard, surfboard and bike), my passport and all genres of music.

Meet Zach Makilan, First Assistant Golf Professional at Mayacama

At Mayacama, golf is our passion.  Our Jack Nicklaus Signature course is unequivocally one of his finest, drawing golfers from far and wide for a chance to play.  One of the reason for the exceptional Mayacama golf experience is our team of professionals, such as First Assistant Golf Professional, Zach Makilan.

We recently asked Zach to share some insight, as well as some of her local favorites, with us.

What led you to your role as First Assistant Golf Pro at Mayacama?
I started working at Mayacama on opening week in August 2001. I began as a member of the Outside Services team when we got our photo taken with Jack Nicklaus. After playing golf for the Santa Rosa Junior College, I started working full time at Mayacama in 2004. I’m so lucky to be a part of Mayacama and I’m very grateful to be the First Assistant Golf Professional.

Describe the moment you knew you loved the game:
When I made my first birdie! It was the 5th hole, Par 3 at the Fairgrounds Golf Course. I hit a 5 wood from 120 yards and made the putt. After that moment, I was hooked!

Favorite part of the Job:
Golf. The main reason that we are Golf Professionals is because we love to play the game. There are some days that it doesn’t feel like a job. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by golf and doing what I love.

What sets the Mayacama golf program apart from the crowd?
The golf course is one of the best in Northern California, and our everyday conditions reflect that. We feel like the golf course is always “Tournament Ready” because that’s the way it plays year round. Another big influence is our Caddies! Our Caddie Program preserves the traditions of the game and help make the experience more enjoyable.

Describe your proudest ‘Golf Moment’ to date:
My proudest Golf Moment is standing on the first tee of the Old Course at St. Andrews with Teddy Antonopoulos. There is a feeling you get when you step in front of the Royal & Ancient Clubhouse. It is a very special place and I hope that one day I will make it back.

Meet Chelsa Helget, Assistant Golf Professional at Mayacama

At Mayacama, golf is more than just a sport, it’s a passion.  Our Jack Nicklaus Signature course is unequivocally one of his finest. Guided by caddies, golfers take to the meticulously groomed, 6,761-yard layout.  Our golf program is one of the finest in the region and one reason for this is Assistant Golf Professional, Chelsa Helget.

We recently asked Chelsa to share some insight, as well as some of her local favorites, with us.

What led you to your role as Assistant Golf Pro at Mayacama?
I played NCAA Division II collegiate golf for Sonoma State University which is near to Mayacama. Our golf team was fortunate enough to play the golf course twice a year. Mayacama was hosting the 2010 USGA Men’s State Team  Championship and our golf team members volunteered in order to give our thanks for allowing us to play the beautiful course. It was at this time I realized I wanted to work at this club! I began working part-time in the golf shop my senior year of college as my college golf career was coming to an end. I realized I needed to make a decision between the wine industry and the golf industry and I knew from my work experience in both fields that golf was my passion and chosen career choice. It has been one of the best decisions of my life to earn my Class A PGA classification while working here as well as nearly earning my Class A LPGA Teaching and Club Professional affiliation. I will be elected to the PGA on October 4 and I attend my final LPGA Seminar the end of October 2017 so I will have my Class A by the end of this year, which was my long-term goal 4 years ago!

Describe the moment you knew you loved the game:
The moment I realized I could score better than my two older brothers is the moment I knew I loved golf!

Favorite part of the Job:
My office view is my favorite part of the job, it’s absolutely stunning every day here.

Favorite location on Mayacama’s Golf Course:
My favorite location is #15 tee because of the view.
Best time of day to enjoy it: Evening

Describe your proudest ‘Golf Moment’ to date:
My proudest golf moment to date was winning my first collegiate tournament in Arizona. I remember the nerves I had and how well I managed my emotions and just played one shot at a time. Every minute of that golf round feels like just yesterday even though it was 9 years ago! …and also shooting the course record here at Mayacama with a group of lovely lady members, I shot 66 and it just felt like a walk in the park.

Lightning Round

If I could play a round with anyone, it’d be: Buddha

Meet Rebekah Reynoso, Events Manager at Mayacama

Mayacama is the quintessential Wine Country experience, offering its members unparalleled services, amenities and events.  This effort is lead by the experienced team of Mayacama professionals. One team member with a passion for gatherings and festivities is Rebekah Reynoso, Events Manager at Mayacama. We recently asked Rebekah to share some insight, as well as some of her local favorites, with us.

Before I was Events Manager for Mayacama….
I have been in the food and beverage industry since I was 16-years-old. I started by working in various restaurants throughout Sonoma County and, since then, have had a passion for the hospitality industry. Now, I have been working at Mayacama Golf Club for 15 years! I love being able to create memorable experiences for our members.

Four reasons Mayacama’s site and location makes for a memorable event venue:
The beautiful olive trees in our courtyard.
The grounds of our golf course. We take great pride in our landscape it has established itself as our most popular backdrop.
Our back terrace that overlooks the grounds of our golf course.
The quietness of our property. As soon as you enter our gates it feels as if you have entered a private world. That reservation is refreshing.

My three favorite annual events held at Mayacama and why:
Patrick’s Day Four Ball – This event is the kick off to the tournament season and sets the tone for the year. It is a sold out event and I enjoy seeing all the players come in their best St. Patrick’s Day attire.
All Vintner Pour – This event is our most popular. We typically have up to 400 people sign up each year. I really enjoy the full set up – all the floral, linen, and décor creates such a memorable atmosphere for our members.
Women’s Member Guest Tournament – I love being able to see the women of Mayacama come out to play a two day tournament. We make it special by including luncheons, receptions, and special gifts for all the players.

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of the Mayacama community?
I think there are a lot of reasons that people choose to become a part of this community. Our golf course, to start, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and intrigues, regardless if you play or not. The social camaraderie – we hold so many special events for our members that offer an opportunity to meet new people. Our community is unique and compelling because we establish relationships with each member. For us, we take pleasure when they associate our club as home.

Locals know best. Share 3 of your favorite Annual Sonoma County events that members and guest’s should attend and why.
Annual DuMOL Wine Tasting – Fun.
Sonoma County Fair – Family.
Barrel Tasting – Memorable.

Current Addiction:
I would say my phone. All of my children are grown up and as a mom that is our number one source of communication.

5 things I can’t live without:
My friends, family, phone, wine, and coffee!

Best part of my job:
I love my team. I have a very dedicated crew that shows up to every event ready to work. They are self-motivated and dependable. They make event we have, member or private, run seamlessly.

Next spot on my travel itinerary:
Hawaii

Meet Brian Hill, Front Office Lead at Mayacama

Mayacama is the quintessential Wine Country experience, offering its members unparalleled services.  This effort is lead by the experienced team of Mayacama professionals. One team member with a wealth of local knowledge and passion for the region is Brian Hill, Front Office Lead at Mayacama. We recently asked Brian to share some insight, as well as some of his local favorites, with us.

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of the Mayacama community?

The most compelling reason I feel people want to be a part of this community is the people. Everyone here is here because they want to be; members guests and our employees. That is a big reason why the atmosphere at this club is so good. Everyone is happy and with a good attitude.

Something people may not know about Mayacama is:

Something you may not know about the club is that the land was originally owned by Charles Schultz. We also are in the top 100 of Golf Courses in America!

Favorite spot on the Mayacama course/why:
Favorite spot on the course is the 3rd . The third hole is nothing but great, after playing one and two you walk into a testy par 3 that is no break from the challenge of the start of the course. No matter what set of tees you are playing it is a challenge ranging from 129 to 178 yards. The carry is intimidating and you have to be able to trust your swing and your club selection in order to score on that hole. If confidence is an issue, a high number will more than likely be a result. It’s a signature golf hole and it’s also one of my favorites because I have my one and only hole in 1 on this hole!!

Favorite item on Chef Pikey’s menu:
The great thing about Mayacama, is that our Chef is constantly changing out menu throughout the seasons. I have been fortunate enough to try many amazing dishes throughout my time here. My favorite item is the cheeseburger – which is luckily, almost always on the menu. It’s thick, juicy and always cooked to the perfect temperature.

Favorite annual event at Mayacama/why:
My favorite annual event here at Mayacama would have to be our Easter Sunday festivities. Seeing the families all together, the kids happy and playing everywhere makes for a fantastic event. Our activities team hides around 5000 eggs for all the kids on the driving range and I think it takes the kids about 3 minutes to get them all!  There is also a beautiful brunch, a petting zoo and many activities for the kids in our courtyard.

Best spot to catch the sunset at Mayacama:
Our property consists of over 600 acres, so I feel like wherever you are the sunset is bound to be a special. But, my favorite place would be on the back terrace. The terrace faces a couple of holes on the course, and when the sun goes down it really makes me recognize the beauty of where I work.

Best month to visit/why:
The best month would have to be May. Every April, we go through an aeration which prepares our golf course for the upcoming season and is perfect by May! We host our All Vintner Pour , the second week of May, and it is our biggest event yet. 300 people come to the Pour that features all of our Vintner Members pouring their best wines! Also My favorite tournament, The Match Play Championships, is during this month! May really kick starts all these popular events and signifies the beginning of Summer – bringing out all of our members and their families.

Locals know best. Share 3 of your favorite spots around Sonoma County for members to get on their must visit list:
Valette– A fantastic restaurant in Healdsburg. Have to order the scallops!
32 Winds Winery– Our Vintner Member, Ed Mascarin, owns this boutique winery and the wines are just as fantastic as the property it is on.
Safari West– Safari West is a 400-acre private wildlife preserve located just 25 min from Mayacama. The selection of wildlife emphasizes species native to Africa, including giraffes, rhinoceros, cheetahs, and numerous species of birds. It is a fun place for the family to see animals, have a tour around the facility in a jeep, and even enjoy a nice stay on the property!

Lightning-round

If I wasn’t working you’d find me at: home with wife, son Brayden, daughter Ava while watching the Warriors or Giants!

5 things I can’t live without:  Kids (Brayden & Ava), Wife (Lisa), sports, my bed, and beer

Best part of my job: Co-Workers

Next spot on my travel itinerary: Hawaii

Meet Tim Hoffman, Director of Sales at Mayacama

Membership in a Private Residence Club, especially one of the quality of Mayacama, offers many benefits beyond those typical of second home ownership. At Mayacama, every residence is meticulously maintained and managed, removing all of the property management, maintenance and worries associated with second home ownership. Your only job as a Mayacama Member is to relax and enjoy your stay.

Tim Hoffman, Director of Sales at Mayacama, helps members obtain their goal of residential membership.  He recently took time to answer a few questions for us.

What was life like before becoming Director of Sales?
Before my business life, I was fortunate to travel the world representing my country through sport. For 13 years, I traveled internationally as a member of the US National Speed Skating Team, competing in many World Cups and World Championships, and was blessed to have the ability early in my career to become National Champion 4 times…prior to arthritis setting in and wheels falling off 😉 After retiring, I moved into sales, both residential and development real estate sales in Park City, UT. With neither my, or myself, skiing anymore…we moved to wine country to escape the winters, where I was fortunate to find a career here at Mayacama!

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of the Mayacama community?
Each individual or family has something inherently unique that compels them to join. Notwithstanding the amazing beauty and ambiance of the topography and architectural design of Mayacama…when it comes down to it, the energy and the sense of belonging that our members and staff exude is perhaps the most compelling of all.

The 3 things that owners in the Residence Club are most surprised to discover at Mayacama are:
(1) The feeling that you are part of a family every time you visit. With members coming from everywhere across the country, Mayacama has become a second family for many!
(2) Although it sounds boring…Consistency. The way the club is managed, the food service and quality, the course maintenance and experience, etc… You know that every visit to Mayacama will be an extraordinary experience.
(3) Mayacama is not only for adults…our childrens’ programming is truly second to none which evidenced by this past Easter at the club!

3 favorite features of the Mayacama Villas: The Mayacama Villas will be the perfect meld between our Private Residence Club Membership and our Estate Home Ownership. Whereas there are many exciting benefits of Villa ownership, my 3 favorite features would be (1) the ever popular yet tastefully redesigned Harvest Room (2) True owner use flexibility and control in deciding when they will stay in their villa and when they will lease their villa back to the club (3) the ability to have a guarantee that 100% of the Villa costs (including property tax, utilities, insurance, reserves, maintenance, etc…) will be covered.

Locals know best. Describe a few destinations in Sonoma County that you’d recommend to guests.
Sonoma wine country has so much to offer from the Charles Shultz museum, to amazing wine tastings, to hiking trails or biking our country roads, or to visiting the coast. Over time, I believe members and guests should take the opportunity to visit as much of the area as they can. Our Vintner Members have some of the finest wineries around to visit, Healdsburg continues to offer more and more boutique shops, restaurants and tastings rooms, Safari West is an experience hard to find anywhere stateside. With the coming expansion the our local airport, and the additional airlines lining up to offer flights to and from…Sonoma County just beginning to take off!

Now for the Lightning Round.

Red or White: Red

Favorite spot on the Mayacama course: 15 tee box…that view is something else!

5 things I can’t live without: That’s easy…My wife, family & friends, traveling with any or all of them, BBQing on a warm summer night (or on cold blistery night for that matter)

Best part of my job: The ability to introduce and welcome many new Members to one of the finest private clubs in the world.

Next spot on my travel itinerary: a few of us old teammates are planning a trip through Europe, to tour our families around the cities and towns we competed in most often…cant wait! But before then…a quick trip to Wisconsin for a family reunion.

Thanks for taking the time out of busy schedule Tim!
