Meet Activities Director, Melinda Murray

It’s great to be a kid at Mayacama, where we offer an array of area and on-site adventures for our youngest Members. In addition to traditional adventures, there are also special events showcasing crafts from glass fusion workshops, sculpture classes and science experiments. Year-round, we’re always looking for new ways to create enjoyable activities which will become unforgettable memories for the little ones.

We recently had a chance to chat with Mayacama’s Activities Director, Melinda Murray, to gain some personal and professional insight.

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of Mayacama?

Over the last seven years of working at Mayacama, I have learned that one of the biggest pulls for our members, especially those with children, is that the club is so kid friendly. With our newly renovated play room, kids’ nights during most club events, childcare offered at anytime, our extensive summer camp schedule, and year round activity options, our members feel comfortable knowing that their children will have as much fun as they will during their stay.

What is the most popular family-friendly event at Mayacama:

Our biggest event by far for the whole family is our Easter celebration we hold every year on Easter Sunday. We fill the courtyard with crafts, cookie decorating, games, a balloon artist, cartoonist, baby animal petting zoo, and our very own Easter Bunny to take pictures with. We also have a 5,000 egg hunt that always gets the kids excited. Other noteworthy events at the club are our Mothers day brunch with a gift craft option for the children, Gingerbread house decorating at the Christmas party, and the Halloween carnival I am very excited to be bringing back this year.

Outside of Mayacama, what are 3 of your favorite spots to take kids?

I love keeping the kids active and letting them have the freedom to run around, so one of my top spots to take children is Rebounderz in Rohnert Park. It is an indoor trampoline park with an arcade and huge jungle gym for the kids to explore.

The Charles Schulz museum and Snoopy’s Ice Arena are other great spots to take kids of all ages. The museum encourage creativity with a cartoon classes offered and the history of one of our famous Sonoma County residents, while the ice rink lets the kids release some energy and play.

My other favorite spot to take the kids is Glass Fusion and Pottery Too in Sebastopol where the children are able to showcase their creative side and make beautiful and one of a kind art pieces.

What are your favorite Sonoma County annual events that are kid-friendly?

The Sonoma County Fair is a great place to take children of all ages with the rides, shows, food, and attractions that always guarantee a good time. There are also many local children theater productions and child friendly shows that run throughout the year. These are great to go to because I love when seeing a show with a child inspires their inner performer.

What’s new at Mayacama?

Last year we renovated the clubhouse kids room by opening up all the walls and added games, big screen TV’s, a ping pong table, and shuffle board table, making it a family friendly location to spend some quality time in.

One of the additions to the activities schedule I am most excited about is the Halloween Carnival we will be bringing back this year. With games, crafts, haunted carriage rides, and entertainment galore, I am hoping this event will become as popular as the Easter Celebration.

3 words I’d use to describe Mayacama: Serene, vibrant, and family friendly.

Growing up I dreamed of being a: Professional Ballerina like my mother.

5 things I can’t live without: Golf, performing, friends, popcorn, and my dog.

Best part of my job: Giving children and their families memorable experiences while visiting Mayacama.

Next spot on my travel itinerary: Scotland and Ireland for a historical golf trip.

Mayacama Chef Scott Pikey

Meet Chef Scott Pikey

Scott Pikey, Executive Chef at Mayacama, is passionate about the farm to table experience.  Before joining Mayacama, the American Culinary Federation trained chef practiced and honed his art at such venues as the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, the Michelin-rated Sheen Falls Lodge, a Relais and Chateaux Hotel, in Kerry, Ireland, Larkspur Restaurant in Vail Colorado and in the kitchens of Auberge Resorts in Napa Valley and Bluffton, South Carolina.

A native of St. Louis, Pikey’s culinary endeavors are inspired by the bounty offered by Mother Nature in idyllic Wine Country.  Sourcing local and sustainable meats, fish and produce, the skilled chef enjoys exploring the region in search of a wide variety of fresh ingredients to prepare his dishes.

We recently had a chance to chat with Mayacama’s talented Executive Chef. Get to know Chef Scott Pikey a bit more:

When did you realize you wanted to become a Chef?

My early 20’s, I knew I did not want to wear a suit or be confined to an office. I needed to be challenged with a job that has action, with a lot of moving parts. Cooking was that answer…

Your menus are known for being approachable, local and responsibly sourced. Tell us a little bit about the unique bounty used at Mayacama:

I moved to Pacific Northwest to cook. I have always supported the small farms and would not be where I am today with out there hard work. The product that is available is amazing, which makes my job much easier.

The food I cooked is American, rooted in the traditions of France, Spain and Italy. Using classic cooking techniques and local sustainable product, the end result is technically crafted, honest and focused dishes.

At Mayacama, we are very lucky to have Miranda Forni as our Gardner. Her father, Peter, has run Forni Brown Gardens in Calistoga since the 80’s. When I was a young cook at Auberge these guys would deliver the most beautiful greens.

Today we sustain the restaurant with 90% of all green from our garden and are looking to expand to 1 acre by 2017.

What are your go-to ingredients in the MAYACAMA garden:

Autumn/ Winter: Cinderella Pumpkins, Red Vained Kale & Chard
Spring: Lemon Verbena, Strawberries, Sugar Snap Peas
Summer: Heirloom Tomatoes, Pole Beans, Nutmeg Melons & Hot Peppers

What inspires your menus and do you have a personal favorite Autumn dish?

The Seasons: Mother nature tells us what to cook. There is great dish I am really into that consists of Duck Fat Roasted Carrots, Cider Glazed Pork Belly, Warm Dates, Wheat Berries Granola and Huckleberry Jus.

Name your 3 personal favorite Sonoma County restaurants:

Barndiva/ Shed / Hana Sushi

Lightning Round:

The Chef I’d most like to collaborate with: Chef Alex Lee
Most ordered Mayacama dish: Fish Tacos
If I’m not in the kitchen you’ll find me: With My 6 year old “twins” Vivian & Dawson
If I wasn’t a Chef, I’d be a: Fly Fishing Guide
Person I’d most like to cook for: My mother. She lives and St. Louis and I only see her once a year.
Guilty Pleasure: Juicy Cheeseburger
Favorite Travel Destinations: Spain and France

10 Reasons We Love Mayacama Life

There are so many reasons to love life at Mayacama. From its prime location to amazing amenities, we’re showcasing the top 10 reasons we enjoy life at Wine Country’s premiere resort community.

675 Acres of Classic California Wine Country
Your very own sprawling spot in the heart of Wine Country has to top the list. Sonoma County offers some of the most picturesque settings in Northern California, whether taking in rolling hills of grape vines and the colors they bring, exploring the charm and character of one of its many quaint towns or enjoying outdoor activities in a lovely natural setting. It’s hard to believe such a tranquil location exists amazingly close and within easy reach of the buzz of an international city.

Easy Access to San Francisco City Life
We’d be amiss if we didn’t highlight Mayacama’s close proximity to San Francisco. Just over an hour away the City by The Bay offers a variety of entertainment and cultural venues coupled with its incredible food scene. If you find yourself heading into the City, be sure to visit this popular travel site showcasing all that San Francisco has to offer.

A Day Trip to Lake Tahoe’s Year-Round Playground

The Raw Beauty of the Sonoma Coastline
The rugged majesty of the Sonoma coastline is easy to reach from Mayacama. You can also travel back in time with a visit to the early Russian establishment at Fort Ross, an outpost engaged in hunting and trading.

No Club Celebrates Golf and Wine like ‪Mayacama
Of course, we are a bit partial when it comes to golf courses. Our Jack Nicklaus Signature course is unequivocally one of his finest. GOLF.com ranks Mayacama #9 among the “19 Best 19th Holes”. Saying, “It boasts (35+) vintner-members, including the folks who produce Cakebread Cellars Chalk Hill Estate Winery and Silver Oak Cellars. Each vintner provides special tastings each year — the better to help members cope with a Jack Nicklaus design that’s so tough, it would drive anyone to pop a second cork.” However, if you do find yourself along the California coast, there are a number of outstanding public courses in Pebble Beach and Santa Cruz, an easy drive from Mayacama.

Pedal Heaven – 2-Wheeled Nirvana
Recreational bicycling options abound in the region. Enjoy scenic and winding roads as you tour the landscape of Wine Country on 2-wheels.
