Golf Course

When golf is played at Mayacama, the game returns to its time-honored origins as a walking course following Scottish tradition. Woven into the hillsides and valleys, the Jack Nicklaus Signature course is unequivocally one of his finest. Guided by caddies, golfers take to the meticulously groomed, 6,761-yard layout. At Mayacama there is never a need for a tee time, but a few minutes on the practice green are best considered. Consistently ranked among Golf Digest’s “Top 100 Courses in America,” the soul of the club is the camaraderie – from the annual Member-Guest tournaments to the “Sip ’n Swings” to the interclub challenges against the leading clubs in the US and around the world.

Of the 200 courses that carry his name, this is among Jack’s very best, where deep green fairways snake though golden valleys and oak-studded hills. Tees or greens, and sometimes both, are elevated. And while not long for a championship track of this caliber at 6,800 yards, the slope is 150. As such, Mayacama is not a course where power prevails, but one where a deft touch and patience pay off. It is that truly rewarding Members’ course — one where every round is anticipated, where each is an invigorating challenge, and perhaps best of all, where the stakes are not dollars but wine, and winnings happily shared.

Hole 1

Par 4 – 434 Yards

The first hole is dramatic and brilliantly framed. It’s a good introduction to some of the greater demands that come along later. Its wide fairway gives the player a nice opportunity to loosen up. It also gets one started on an enjoyable round by taking the player into the rolling hills, streams and oaks of Mayacama – a wonderful beginning to a journey. Overall, it’s a great, fair, wide-open hole that still has some opportunities for risk and reward.

Hole 2

Par 5 – 525 Yards

The second hole is a risk-reward par 5. At 525 yards, the hole isn’t long by today’s standards, and tee shots of 275 yards or more will leave players with an opportunity to reach the putting green in two shots. The green is well protected in front and to the right by a steep ravine, with several deep bunkers adding additional defense. From the fairway, hole locations on the right side of this green offer an intimidating visual.  The shot must be carried to the green and must be stopped quickly in order to remain on the putting surface.

This program will provide the selected juniors’ access to Mayacama’s nationally recognized Top 100 Golf Course, the incredible staff and an opportunity to practice and be challenged by peers of equal playing ability in programs developed specifically for this group. Through these experiences we hope each participant will become not only an exceptional golfer but an outstanding citizen.

  • Invitation Only
  • Juniors 12-18 Years Old

At Mayacama, we refer to club competitions as “Championships” rather than “tournaments” to help define how special these occasions are. Anyone can host a tournament but holding a Championship commits the hosts to higher standards.

It all begins with formal invitations that are sent to Members. Invitations include the conditions of the competition as well as an official entry form. Starting times are given in advance. The course is marked as a TOUR event would be, and the staff, including the superintendent and caddie master, wear coats and ties. The starting protocol includes formally announcing the names and home cities of each player on the first tee. At the end of the round, players have to sign their scorecards in the scorer’s tent. And at the formal awards presentation, winners are compelled to speak.

Mayacama’s Championship Program is also more than just one special tournament—it’s an ongoing series occurring throughout the year. The competitions kick off in March with the St. Patrick’s Day Fourball. May has members thinking about draining their glasses as much as draining their putts during the Vintner’s Cup, when the club’s Vintner Members become the “pros” in a pro-am event that features a draw party to see which winemaker will play in which group. Magnums of the region’s finest wines are presented as tee prizes. Late spring also sees the annual Schulz Celebrity Golf Classic, benefiting Sonoma County Children’s Charities and featuring athletes, musicians and other stars that have included Kurt Russell, Peter Kostis, Joe Montana and host John O’Hurley – Seinfeld’s Jay Peterman. The highlights of the year’s competitions are the Men’s and Women’s Club Championships. Memorial Day Weekend is the date for the Mayacama Cup, the Club’s annual Match Play Championship.
