May Events in Wine Country

With the weather warming up, it’s time to make plans to attend some local events.  May offers a number of venues the whole family will enjoy.  Experience film festivals, wine tasting, rose parades and so much more this month.

Castles and Kites – May 6
Bring the whole family to Doran Beach and celebrate the joys of sandcastle building and kite flying. Amateurs and experts are welcome. Bring your own kite or purchase one from local vendors. Long-time sand sculptors will be on hand to work on elaborate creations to build the sandcastle you have always imagined. More information can be found here.

Catch a Spring Class @ SHED in Healdsburg
Kokedama Workshop – May 6 from 1-2:30pm
Make your own kokedama and create a garden on a string with the guidance of SHED’s floral designer Sue Volkel in this hands-on workshop at SHED. Very similar to bonsai, the plant and roots of a kokedama are contained in a small space.

Harvest with Stefani Bittner & Alethea Harampolis – May 13 from 1-2:30pm
Learn to create beautiful floral arrangements and botanical-based culinary and body care products with the harvest from your backyard garden with designers and authors Stefani Bittner and Alethea Harampolis of Homestead Design Collective. Visit the events site to register.

Derby Day – May 6
The Meals on Wheels Derby Day is one of the most memorable charitable events of the region. Celebrating the rich traditions of the Kentucky Derby®, attendees walk the catwalk with their finest Derby-inspired apparel and compete for prizes. A team of Sonoma County chefs will prepare a four-course, southern-inspired gourmet luncheon. The day will include a silent and live auction and culminate with the live running of the Kentucky Derby®. More information can be found here.

Film Festival Petaluma – May 6
Film Fest Petaluma returns to the Mystic Theatre in historic downtown Petaluma. Programs feature a broad mix of animated, live action, and documentary shorts. All sessions will host international filmmakers in conversation alongside several Sonoma County students. More information can be found here.

Spring at Jordan – May 13
The annual Spring at Jordan party returns to Jordan Winery. The Spring at Jordan event is a celebration of Jordan Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon new vintage releases, hosted on the Winery Chateau lawns. More information can be found here.

*Mayacama Member* 2017 All Vintner Pour – May 13
Our 2017 All Vintner Tournament and Pour is scheduled for Saturday, May 13 from 4-7pm.  The weekend will start with our Draw Party Dinner on Friday, May 12. Participating Members will have their names randomly drawn and are then paired with a Vintner Member for the “Vintner Cup” golf tournament held on Saturday morning. The wines to be featured on Saturday afternoon during the Pour are truly “off the charts”. Live Brazilian jazz from Jive Samba will again be part of the festivities.  The next day, the wine orders will begin to flow.  Come and join us and experience the best of the Wine Country. Mother’s Day at Russian River Rose – May 14
Experience the beauty and fragrance of the once-blooming antique roses and stroll down the Rose Allee with huge rambling roses billowing down from 12’X12′ arches in Healdsburg. Enjoy the ‘Butterfly Garden,’ the ‘Rose History Trail,’ and  the fragrant Perfume Rose Fields. The nursery will be open 10am -5pm and brimming with roses and hummingbird/butterfly attracting annuals and perennials. Visit the website.

Sonoma County Backroad Challenge – May 20
It has been said that the Backroad Challenge is the best way to spend a Saturday outside. It’s your chance to ride one of three epic Wine Country backroad routes that will take your breath away and test your resolve. More information can be found here.

Cruisin’ the Boulevard – May 20
Enjoy a day of classic American cars, cruising, rock ‘n roll, and the happy days of the ‘50s and early ‘60s at Cruisin’ the Boulevard.  Petaluma was one of the main shooting locations for the classic movie, American Graffiti. More information can be found here.

Sunset Celebration Weekend at Cornerstone Sonoma – May 20 -21

123nd Annual Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival – May 20
Experience the 123nd Annual Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival, one of Sonoma County’s most time honored traditions and one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in Northern California. After the parade, the fun continues with a festival in Downtown Santa Rosa. Enjoy family fun activities, music, and a variety of food booths. More information can be found here.

Windsor Half Marathon – May 21
Join the fun as the Windsor Half Marathon returns to Wine Country.  Participants can run a variety of distances (Half Marathon – 10k – 5k) all through picturesque Windsor.  More information can be found here.

Oysterpalooza – May 28
Oysterpalooza returns to Valley Ford. The ninth annual Oysterpalooza will take place at Rocker Oysterfeller’s at the Valley Ford Hotel. This celebration of the oyster will include live music from three local bands playing Americana, Roots and Bluegrass. More information can be found here.
