Microadventure: Explore Guerneville

Looking for a little outdoor adventure?  Take a short trip West to the charming town of Guerneville.  Enjoy the rustic charm of this quaint town nestled amidst towering Redwoods, scenic river waters and a casual, carefree atmosphere.  It’s a perfect setting for a relaxing day for you and your family.

Guerneville has been a vacation getaway for San Francisco’s residents for quite some time; it’s small town charm and rustic setting is a welcomed change from the urban pace of the city by the Bay. Don’t be misled by Guerneville’s small town charm; it boasts a variety of resorts, trendy restaurants and wineries making it a regional destination hot spot.

9:00 – Arrive in Downtown Guerneville
Head to Big Bottom Market for a hearty breakfast and possibly to stock up on a few items for you to enjoy throughout the rest of the day.  They offer a Box Lunch which includes an artisan sandwich, tasty chips, house-made cookie and bottled water – perfect for a mid-day picnic.

10:00 – 12:00 – Explore Main Street
Explore historic stores and immerse yourself in the Guerneville cultural, a town rich in Sonoma County history.  Travel back to a simpler time as you walk the small downtown area experiencing all that this quaint town has to offer.

12:00 – 5:00 – Experience Redwoods, Rivers or Wine
Guerneville is known for its amazing scenery and there are a number of venues to explore while visiting this town.  Johnson’s Beach is a popular spot to experience the waterfront of the Russian River as it travels to it final destination, the Pacific Ocean at nearby Jenner.  Or head north 5 minutes and explore the majestic beauty of the 805-acre Armstrong Redwoods State Nature Reserve.  The ancient coast redwood is the tallest living thing on our planet!  These remarkable trees live to be 500-1,000 years old, grow to a diameter of 12-16 feet, and stand from 200-250 feet tall. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

5:00 – 7:00 – Dinner in Town
Time to head back into town and experience some great dining options for a town with a population under 5,000.  Main Street Bistro is Sonoma County’s longest running acoustic music venue which also serves up a variety of California Italian menu items. On Main Street you will also find popular restaurants such as casual 3 Alarm Grill, popular El Barrio Bar (known for their drinks but also has a small menu of dining options), Dick Blomster’s Korean Diner and modern California bistro, boon eat + drink, whose menu is comprised of small plates, salads, and seasonal main dishes – simple and tasty.

After dinner, head to the Guerneville Bank Club, a collective retail and art gallery space that features art shows, handcrafted pies, homemade ice cream, curated retail and a little bit of history compliments of the Russian River Historical Society.
