“My girlfriend and I had a beautiful stay at Mayacama this past weekend! The facilities and faculty were both worth 5 stars each!! We did everything from tennis to hiking to biking to working out in the gym, all complimented with really tasty food and drinks. The fish tacos were some of the best I’ve ever had! It was peaceful and comfortable. Can’t wait until our next stay!!” – Katie B. Santa Barbara

“This facility really is as good as it gets…Private jet to Santa Rosa, picked-up by the awesome Mayacama staff and on the golf course in less than 30 minutes after landing.  The food is incredible and I’ve never seen a better wine cellar.  The golf course is always in perfect shape and it’s a fun layout as well as a workout (no carts)….”  – Mic H. Huntington Beach

“My family and I are members of Mayacama. We enjoy the course, the people, the wine, and food that they provide. It’s a wonderful environment to be in. It’s a very elite country club and no other club can compete with them. The Spa is also very relaxing and provide great services. I always enjoy my time there, especially since the views are amazing.” – Bianca W. Healdsburg

“My family and I felt lucky to have stayed at the property for 4 days. The grounds, rooms, staff, food, drinks, and golf were all amazing. It’s really the little things that are done so well (cocktails are made by hand with top shell spirits, the caddies at the course take pride in helping you get the most out of your round, the staff has in general a family persona, etc). A truly amazing experience!” – Donovan S. Irvine

Local Love – Brewsters Beer Garden

Wine Country has an amazing and diverse food scene.  From formal to casual and everything in-between, there are a host of incredible dining options throughout the region.  It’s rare to find a new venue which is truly unique to the area;  Brewsters Beer Garden is that rare find.

Located in the Historic District of Downtown Petaluma, Brewsters Beer Garden was built for people who want more than just a good meal when they eat, they want a dining experience which offers a laid back and kid-friendly environment.  This open-air dining restaurant, whose cuisine is focused on technique-driven dishes influenced by Southern Carolina BBQ and a smattering of locally sourced and sustainably-raised Petaluma producers and ranchers, doesn’t disappoint and is truly a fun and memorable dining experience.  You can even bring Fido, as Brewsters is a dog-friendly restaurant.  It’s a great location for the new restaurant, as Petaluma is the center of the Craft Beer craze in Sonoma County.

Menus changes daily but you can get an idea what they are serving up by perusing their menus here.  Here is a quick glimpse of some of their menu items.  From their Rotisserie and BBQ menu: 1/2 Smoked Chicken, Chopped Hog and Brisket.  Feeling hungry?  Try an item from their Large Plate menu; the King Salmon, with succotash and hollandaise or the Fried Chicken, with buttermilk biscuits, country gravy and swiss chard both sound delicious.  They also have small menu items, sandwiches, salads and a kid’s menu.  Brewsters is open T-FRI 5pm-close / S + S 11:00am-close.

Winter months bring a chill to the air so how does one get a feeling of warmth while dining in Wine Country?  It’s easy really; just head to these local restaurants which offer the relaxing warmth, sounds and aroma of crackling wood fires on a cool winter day. Whether you are enjoying the ambiance of a blazing fireplace or partaking in the delicious treats cooked up in a wood-burning oven, the warm atmosphere offered by both is a welcome and inviting setting for you and your family.

Campo Fina, Healdsburg
Enjoy authentic, rustic Italian food all set in a comfortable, casual setting which includes a wood-burning oven on the back patio. Try the Wood-fired Pork Belly Pizza with pork belly, parmigiano, marscapone, brusells sprouts, leeks, garlic & black pepper.

Cafe Citti, Kenwood
While wood-burning ovens fire your pizza, relax at this casual, locals’ hangout anchored by a fireplace to warm you on cool days.  Not in the mood for pizza?  Try one of their specialty pastas.  You can’t go wrong with the Gnocchi, Luca’s house made potato dumplings served with your choice of Meat sauce, Marinara sauce or Pesto sauce or the Ravioli alla Citti- Luca’s house made ravioli filled with pork, swiss chard and fresh herbs, served in a light tomato and basil cream sauce.

Rosso Pizzeria & Mozzarella Bar, Petaluma and Santa Rosa
Enjoy rustic Italian food created from fresh, organic, locally sourced seasonal ingredients. The Tuscan wood-burning oven gives you the true Neapolitan style of crisp, yeasty, wood-fired pizza. The wine bar boasts over 100 wines from around the world to pair with one of the best pizzas in Sonoma County. Add the Capo salad (local arugula, oven roasted artichokes, shaved grana padano and whole lemon vinaigrette) with your pizza for an unforgettable and delicious dining experience.

Central Market, Petaluma
The perfect setting for a gathering of friends and family, this popular Petaluma restaurant offers farm-to-fork Californian-Mediterranean fare and wine pairings served up in a casual, loft-like bistro, with bread baked daily in its wood-fired oven. From the Wood Grill section of the dinner menu, try the Mary’s Chicken Breast with soft polenta and roasted mushrooms or the Wagyu Beef Sirloin Steak served with Diablo butter and Kennebec fries.

Stark’s Steak & Seafood, Santa Rosa
Located a few blocks from Historic Railroad Square, this Santa Rosa establishment serves up some of Sonoma’s best steaks and seafood. Enjoy your meal in the front room with its roaring fireplace and popular bar, or the more formal dining room.  Either way you’ll experience some of the best dining in Wine Country.  Try the Bacon wrapped 10 oz. filet mignon with the whole grain mustard bearnaise;  it’s simply delicious.

Monti’s, Santa Rosa
Monti’s is a popular choice for contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. In addition to nightly specials from the large wood-fired rotisserie, there are small and big plates featuring fresh local meats and seasonal produce.  Their “Off the Rotisserie” menu items change daily but offer such dishes as Honey glazed Neiman Ranch St. Louis spare ribs and Suckling pig served with sage polenta, smoked pearl onion and swiss chard.

Vignette, Sebastopol
The wood-burning oven is blazing at this delightful spot situated in The Barlow.  Vignette serves up delicious Neapolitan pizza made with love & true artisan intentions.  All pizzas are baked in a wood fire oven at 850 degrees, producing a lightly charred tender crust and topped with the highest quality, local organic ingredients. Choose from a variety of menu items from their Pizze Classiche and Pizze Moderne categories.

So remember to bundle up and enjoy all the warmth that Wine Country has to offer.

Head to Plank Coffee (227 N Cloverdale Blvd) for your favorite caffeinated beverage and baked good to start your day.  Get cozy in one of the large leather chairs and take some time to enjoy your beverage and unwind in a town known for its relaxed and casual attitude.  One Facebook reviewer had this to say about Plank Coffee: ‘The baristas and staff who take my orders are always so welcoming and friendly. Great service, delicious pastries and the best organic coffee and teas. If you like cinnamon, must try the Cinnabang coffee drink!’

Specializing in one-of-a-kind vintage industrial and mid-century pieces, 14feet. (229 N Cloverdale Blvd) is a sophisticated and elegant home and gift store where you will find a perfect gift for friends, family or even yourself.  They offer relaxing bath and body products as well as home decor items, furniture and kitchen items too.  Enjoy a wonderfully curated retail experience at this eclectic shop.  Nearby Bolt Fabric + Home (219 N Cloverdale Blvd) offers an exciting mix of home decor to blend with high quality quilting fabrics adding a dimension that few fabric stores can boast.

Experience the Art. Cloverdale, in partnership with nearby Geyserville, has created a trail of high quality outdoor sculptures to peruse. New sculptures are installed each May, and stay in place for a year, when the next set of artworks is put in place.  A total of 34 sculptures are in place for 2016-17.

Taste the Region.  Cloverdale makes a great start for visiting unique tasting rooms in the nearby Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. Plan your trip with a little help from Sonomacounty.com.

Enjoy the Thrill.  For those seeking the ultimate outdoor experience, head to NorCal Skydiving  and experience the adventure of a lifetime in one of the most beautiful places in the world. When you jump from more than two miles up, you’ll be falling at 120 mph toward the Russian River which snakes through the Alexander Valley… an unforgettable experience!

5 Golf Gifts to Get on Your List

With our Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf course as the centerpiece of Mayacama living, golfers experience the game as it was meant to be played. Of the 200 courses that carry his name, this is among Jack’s very best, where deep green fairways snake though golden valleys and oak-studded hills. It’s a pleasure, as well as a passion, to play the game at Mayacama.

With the recent re-grassing of the course, everyone is gearing up for some of the best golf in the country.  We thought it was a good time to re-purpose some sage advice regarding equipment offered in our recent newsletter.

Golf Ball Facts & Fiction
Common among golf ball manufacturers are the claims that no other ball flies farther, rolls out longer, spins more, putts truer, on and on and on! But what really are the facts?

Mayacama Golf Club’s First Assistant Professional Andrew Black recently had a first-hand look when he was invited to tour the Titleist Golf Ball Plant while attending a Future Leaders Conference at the Titleist Headquarters in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Here are some of the facts (and myths) that he learned while touring Ball Plant III, which manufactures the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1X Golf Balls. But beware … these findings may shock you!

  • There are only THREE golf companies who actually manufacture their own golf balls … Titleist, Bridgestone, and Srixon. All other golf balls are manufactured at a handful of golf ball factories located outside the United States.
  • Because Titleist makes their own golf ball, they are able to monitor each step of the process from start to finish.  Due to their checks and balances only 1 in 1,000,000 golf balls are returned.
  • Titleist not only rigorously examines their own golf balls, but does so to their competitor’s ball as well.  Titleist purchases 6 dozen of every new golf ball that enters the market to test, analyze, and study their competitor’s product.
  • These studies show how their own quality control is second to none because they have their own employees making and examining their golf balls.  Through Titleist’s checks and balances, more golf balls are rejected than actually make it to the market place.  Flaws that disqualify a ball are minimal, usually off-center stamping, etc.  Golf balls that are rejected typically end up on driving ranges as part of the company’s range ball program.
  • Titleist makes different golf balls for different markets. For instance, they make the Titleist Prestige for Japan and China, a ball not sold here in the United States.
  • There are 17 golf balls out on the market from various manufacturers that are exactly the same, with the only difference being the name that is stamped on them.
  • Titleist has been the #1 ball in golf for 68 years.
  • Titleist has an impressive corridor of patents. Their most awarded patent holder has 9 short of Thomas Edison.

So which is the best golf ball for you? If you were to choose one of the 17 golf balls on the market which is essentially the same ball as mentioned above, there would be no difference. So why not choose a ball actually manufactured by the company that represents it? Our Members expect the best, and their choice of which golf ball to play should also be the best. Why sacrifice quality in the ball that you play? Choosing the number one golf ball for 68 years should be a no-brainer. So which ball is best for you? We obviously recommend the Pro V1 or Pro V1x, though other options are available if price is an issue. Stop in and ask a member of your Professional Staff and we can lead you towards selecting a ball that is best for your game.

Yelpers agree, SHED is a unique and captivating Wine Country experience not to be missed.

It’s really amazing when someone takes a chance on doing something unconventional like this. I am impressed by their courage in creating such a new concept. The multi-functional space is themed around anything and everything involving good food.  The end result of walking around inside the space is difficult to describe. It’s like you’re in a little open food village. Shop for food / kitchen supplies and gifts, get food that is already prepared and ready to eat, get groceries (best quality stuff!), have a coffee, have a glass of wine. Honestly, it blew my mind. I felt like a little kid in a candy shop running around checking out all the amazing, delicious, interesting sights. – Alex G.

I was passing through town and stopped at the Visitor’s Center, which turned out to be the local Chamber of Commerce. I asked for a recommendation on a good place for a vegan-friendly lunch. A nice lady recommended The SHED. I’m sure glad she did.  Turns out the SHED is a delight to all your senses! It’s a place where you can bite into some of nature’s treats, pick up some gardening supplies, find a new kitchen tool, stock up on some fresh gourmet food, and get a coffee to go . . . all in one trip.  I had a salad and tisane hibiscus tea. It was a divine lunch in a heavenly outdoor setting! It was an all-around rejuvenating experience. We need a “modern grange” like this in every town! I’m happy to help spread the good news about this place where you can eat, shop, gather and learn! – Lorraine H.

So head north to Healdsburg and experience the best of Wine Country; it’s a great way to spend some quality time with family and friends alike!
