Now that we have the pumpkins covered, we need a few venues to celebrate this special time of year. Petaluma is the place to be, as they have two events sure to be a hit with the entire family.

During the month of October and into the first days of November, Petaluma celebrates El Día de los Muertos, a ritual celebration from México, Latin and South America in which the spirits of dead loved ones are invited to visit the living as honored guests.  The month long celebration has a few events you should put on your calendar:

Fine Art Exhibits and Altars throughout Petaluma
October 1st – November 2nd
Downtown Petaluma
Take a walking tour throughout downtown and view the many beautiful altars and artwork created by members of our community.

Candlelight Procession with Giant Puppets
Saturday October 29th, 6:00 – 10:00
Starts at Water Street Bistro, 100 Petaluma Blvd. North, and ends up at Petaluma Historical Museum, 20 4th Street.
Festivities will include live music, Ballet Folklorico de Petaluma Paquiyollotzin, Aztec dancers, food and art vendors, face painting, art and altars, and much more.

More information can be found on the El Dia de los Muertos Petaluma Facebook page.

Halloween Day celebrations begin early for the little ones.  Join over 60 participating Petaluma Downtown merchants for a fun and safe community Halloween for the entire family and goodies for costumed kids under 12.  Prepare for a hauntingly good time from 3 – 5:30pm on Monday October 31st.  There will be a map on their website the week before Halloween or you can just follow the orange and black balloons you’ll find around town. And when the sun goes down, it’s just a short walk to the residential Historic District where you will find a host of decorated homes and a very large gathering of trick-or-treaters.   D Street is the place to be on Halloween!

Happy Hauntings.

Meet Ted Antonopoulos, Head Golf Professional at Mayacama

At Mayacama, we are passionate about golf.  Our Jack Nicklaus Signature course is unequivocally one of his finest. Guided by caddies, golfers take to the meticulously groomed, 6,761-yard layout.  Our golf program is one of the finest in the region and is headed up by Golf Professional, Ted Antonopoulos.

Ted is all about golf.  Born and raised in Augusta Georgia, he was exposed to the sport at an early age. His father George was an avid golfer and his brother Buddy has been the Head Golf Professional at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound Florida since that Club’s inception. A Golf Professional for 31 years and a Class “A” Member of the Professional Golfers Association of America for 28 years, Ted was recently appointed to the PGA of America Rules Committee; this committee is made up of 35 PGA Members and is responsible for administering the Rules of Golf at all Championships conducted by the PGA of America.

Ted was good enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions, and share some insight, with us.

What sets the golf program at Mayacama apart from the crowd?
I think the fact that we are a walking only club with a commitment to stay that way is a big plus. We have an outstanding caddie program that is well supported by our membership. And the golf course is a beautiful walk in the wine country, with each hole having its own distinctive “look”. Our tournament program offers our members a variety of playing opportunities, from Championship Golf to “Sip ‘N Swing” events and everything in between.

What’s your favorite feature of the Mayacama Golf Course?
The first tee! I always look forward to hitting the first shot of the day, with anticipation of what the next four hours will bring. I enjoy every round at Mayacama and the opening tee shot sets it up!

3 things Golf Members can look forward to:
Completion of the regrassing of the final 8 greens. The new Tyee 007 bent grass will provide our members with even better putting surfaces for the next twenty-plus years.

The addition of another Junior Golf School. With the success or our Boot Camp and the newly-added Junior Golf School, we’ve added a third golf camp for our growing population of Junior Golfers.

The Wyndham Cup will be coming to Mayacama on the Fourth of July!  This event features the top 40 Junior Golfers in the country (20 boys and 20 girls) playing in a Ryder Cup format … EAST vs. WEST! On July 4th, our Members will have the opportunity to play with one of the Juniors in a “Junior-Am” tournament. I was fortunate enough to be invited to officiate in the 2015 Wyndham and it is without a doubt the finest event that I have ever seen. The caliber of golf among these Juniors is outstanding!

What’s your favorite annual Mayacama event and why?
Our Men’s and Women’s Member Guest Tournaments are our feature events, but my favorite is the Annual Championship of Mayacama Golf Club (Club Championship). We are fortunate to have a number of great players at Mayacama, and watching them compete over 54 holes of stroke play for the title makes for a competitive and exciting Championship!

Lightning Round

Best tee time:
Saturday morning at 9:00 am!

Golf Celebrity I’d most like to host:
Bobby Jones!

Most challenging hole at Mayacama:
The twelfth!

Best age to begin golf lessons:
Seven

Favorite course outside of Mayacama:
Royal CountyDown

Next travel destination:
Scottish Highlands for the Women and Ireland for the Men.

Meet Mayacama’s Wine Director, Jeff McCarthy

One of the most popular features at Mayacama is our wine program.  Located in the heart of Wine Country where country roads in every direction are lined with vineyards, Mayacama members enjoy access to the very best Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel vineyards on the continent.  This program is truly unique in that renowned vintners from Napa and Sonoma are not only active members, but also  an integral part of the entire Mayacama experience.  Leading this program is Wine Director, Jeff McCarthy, who willingly offers his experience and expertise with members and guests alike.

We recently asked him to share some of his knowledge, recommendations and tips with us to gain some insight into the Mayacama wine experience.

What are some of your favorite features of the Wine Program at Mayacama?

Working with incredible wineries, our education program and fantastic members who love their wine.

What has been the most rewarding part of your role in the Vintner Program?

The relationships I have made with both our club members and our local wineries.

The Vintner Program is ever-evolving. Describe the newest Vintner Members to join the program and what they offer:

Dutcher Crossing brings many fabulous varietals to work with and their hospitality program has become a club favorite.  Fisher Vineyards has given us some outstanding chardonnay and red varietals in AVAs that give our list better depth.  A visit to their Mountain winery is a great experience.  Wilson Winery brings many different properties to the program allowing us to expand in many categories.  Their hospitality staff is outstanding and the Vineyards they are planting at our front entrance will allow us to expand our education program.  All three wineries have incredible people that add to our club’s wine culture.

Give us some insight into the specialty tours offered to members:

Our tours are based on the preferences of the members.  We try to group them by location to maximize drive time and member needs.  Some offer great behind the scenes experiences, others food and wine pairings, others great picnic spots.  We try to showcase as many as possible.  I personalize a limited amount of tours for members and our concierge is great at identifying member preferences.

We’re big on travel around here. What’s your next travel destination?

Just spent the weekend in Napa, a day in Dry Creek and a half day on the Russian River.  Later this summer the Sierra Foothills, planning a late in the year Santa Barbara trip and a trip to Bordeaux next summer.

Jeff recently featured a wine pairing for those interested in dining on local oysters.

Wine Pairings:  One of the great pleasures for an oyster lover is the pairing of oysters and wine.  I love wines of higher acids to act as foil for the rich fattiness of the oysters.  I also look at what I put on the oysters when making my wine selection.

My two favorite pairings with raw oysters are a great Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine or Champagne or a great Sauvignon Blanc, local or imported.  Since I usually eat my oysters plain or with lemon or a mignonette, I find these wines a perfect paring.  With bbq oysters, I prefer a nice chardonnay with the savory and a light red with the sweet.  The fun part is you get to choose which pairing works best for you.

Visit Hog Island:  Let us set up a tasting at Hog Island for you.  Our concierge can reserve a spot for you on the shores of Tomales Bay in Marshall or you can visit Hog Island in Napa at the Oxbow market or the Ferry Building in San Francisco.  Tuesday in Marshall is shuck-your-own day.  They will give you gloves, ice and an oyster knife.  If you want to bbq, remember to bring your own charcoal.

Saturday, August 13: Silverado Vineyards, 6121 Silverado Trail, Napa

Sunday, August 14: Silverado Vineyards, 6121 Silverado Trail, Napa

The music of composer, conductor and pianist Johann Hummel—the remarkable triple threat of the post-Beethoven age, opens this program — followed by two cornerstone works of the repertoire: Smetana’s autobiographical quartet–written in total deafness, and Robert Schumann’s piano quintet.

Thursday, August 18: The Hess Collection, 4411 Redwood Road, Napa

The 16 String Quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven are considered the pinnacle achievement of the chamber music repertoire. Music in the Vineyards is proud to present the Pacifica Quartet, one of the pre-eminent interpreters of Beethoven, in this five night epic event.
