Members and their guests share their personal Mayacama experiences:

“My girlfriend and I had a beautiful stay at Mayacama this past weekend! The facilities and faculty were both worth 5 stars each!! We did everything from tennis to hiking to biking to working out in the gym, all complimented with really tasty food and drinks. The fish tacos were some of the best I’ve ever had! It was peaceful and comfortable. Can’t wait until our next stay!!” – Katie B. Santa Barbara

“This facility really is as good as it gets…Private jet to Santa Rosa, picked-up by the awesome Mayacama staff and on the golf course in less than 30 minutes after landing.  The food is incredible and I’ve never seen a better wine cellar.  The golf course is always in perfect shape and it’s a fun layout as well as a workout (no carts)….”  – Mic H. Huntington Beach

“My family and I are members of Mayacama. We enjoy the course, the people, the wine, and food that they provide. It’s a wonderful environment to be in. It’s a very elite country club and no other club can compete with them. The Spa is also very relaxing and provide great services. I always enjoy my time there, especially since the views are amazing.” – Bianca W. Healdsburg

“My family and I felt lucky to have stayed at the property for 4 days. The grounds, rooms, staff, food, drinks, and golf were all amazing. It’s really the little things that are done so well (cocktails are made by hand with top shell spirits, the caddies at the course take pride in helping you get the most out of your round, the staff has in general a family persona, etc). A truly amazing experience!” – Donovan S. Irvine

Microadventure: Explore Cloverdale

Looking for a day trip in Wine Country?  Take a short trip North to the town of Cloverdale.  Enjoy the warm and inviting charm of this quaint, small town.  It’s a perfect setting for a relaxing day for you and your family to explore and embrace all that Wine Country has to offer. Located a short 18 miles north of Healdsburg the small community of Cloverdale is often overlooked but still boasts charm and character, offering a nice microadventure for you and your family to enjoy.

9:00 – Arrive in Downtown Cloverdale
Head to Plank Coffee (227 N Cloverdale Blvd) for your favorite caffeinated beverage and baked good to start your day.  Get cozy in one of the large leather chairs and take some time to enjoy your beverage and unwind in a town known for its relaxed and casual attitude.  One Facebook reviewer had this to say about Plank Coffee: ‘The baristas and staff who take my orders are always so welcoming and friendly. Great service, delicious pastries and the best organic coffee and teas. If you like cinnamon, must try the Cinnabang coffee drink!’

10:30 – 12:00 – Explore the Retail Scene
Specializing in one-of-a-kind vintage industrial and mid-century pieces, 14feet. (229 N Cloverdale Blvd) is a sophisticated and elegant home and gift store where you will find a perfect gift for friends, family or even yourself.  They offer relaxing bath and body products as well as home decor items, furniture and kitchen items too.  Enjoy a wonderfully curated retail experience at this eclectic shop.  Nearby Bolt Fabric + Home (219 N Cloverdale Blvd) offers an exciting mix of home decor to blend with high quality quilting fabrics adding a dimension that few fabric stores can boast.

12:00 – 5:00 – Experience Cloverdale
Explore the Past. Explore Cloverdale’s history at the Gould-Shaw House Museum, an authentic 1870s Gothic Revival Cottage, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The adjacent 2,000-square-foot History Center houses a vast artifact collection of the Cloverdale Historical Society.

Experience the Art. Cloverdale, in partnership with nearby Geyserville, has created a trail of high quality outdoor sculptures to peruse. New sculptures are installed each May, and stay in place for a year, when the next set of artworks is put in place.  A total of 34 sculptures are in place for 2016-17.

Taste the Region.  Cloverdale makes a great start for visiting unique tasting rooms in the nearby Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. Plan your trip with a little help from Sonomacounty.com.

Enjoy the Thrill.  For those seeking the ultimate outdoor experience, head to NorCal Skydiving  and experience the adventure of a lifetime in one of the most beautiful places in the world. When you jump from more than two miles up, you’ll be falling at 120 mph toward the Russian River which snakes through the Alexander Valley… an unforgettable experience!

5:00 – 7:00 – Dinner in Town
Head back into town and experience some great dining options in this small town packed with so much charm. One recommendation is Savvy on First. Try the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, with Potato Salad and Pickled Vegetables or the Grilled Spiced Pork Tenderloin, with Ancho BBQ Sauce, White Bean Garlic Puree and Summer Vegetable Succotash. If you are craving Italian, head to Piacére. Try the Gnocchi “Piacére”, House potato ‘dumplings’ in a fresh tomato and light cream sauce combined, or the Chicken Veneziana, Breast of chicken with artichoke and mushrooms in a light marsala sauce. If you find yourself with a hearty appetite after your eventful day,  stop by Hamburger Ranch & Bar-B-Que and try the Baby Back Ribs or Brisket Plate.  You won’t be disappointed.

All in all, a wonderful day full of adventure the whole family will enjoy.  Happy travels!

5 Golf Gifts to Get on Your List

With our Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf course as the centerpiece of Mayacama living, golfers experience the game as it was meant to be played. Of the 200 courses that carry his name, this is among Jack’s very best, where deep green fairways snake though golden valleys and oak-studded hills. It’s a pleasure, as well as a passion, to play the game at Mayacama.

With the recent re-grassing of the course, everyone is gearing up for some of the best golf in the country.  We thought it was a good time to re-purpose some sage advice regarding equipment offered in our recent newsletter.

Golf Ball Facts & Fiction
Common among golf ball manufacturers are the claims that no other ball flies farther, rolls out longer, spins more, putts truer, on and on and on! But what really are the facts?

Mayacama Golf Club’s First Assistant Professional Andrew Black recently had a first-hand look when he was invited to tour the Titleist Golf Ball Plant while attending a Future Leaders Conference at the Titleist Headquarters in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Here are some of the facts (and myths) that he learned while touring Ball Plant III, which manufactures the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1X Golf Balls. But beware … these findings may shock you!

  • There are only THREE golf companies who actually manufacture their own golf balls … Titleist, Bridgestone, and Srixon. All other golf balls are manufactured at a handful of golf ball factories located outside the United States.
  • Because Titleist makes their own golf ball, they are able to monitor each step of the process from start to finish.  Due to their checks and balances only 1 in 1,000,000 golf balls are returned.
  • Titleist not only rigorously examines their own golf balls, but does so to their competitor’s ball as well.  Titleist purchases 6 dozen of every new golf ball that enters the market to test, analyze, and study their competitor’s product.
  • These studies show how their own quality control is second to none because they have their own employees making and examining their golf balls.  Through Titleist’s checks and balances, more golf balls are rejected than actually make it to the market place.  Flaws that disqualify a ball are minimal, usually off-center stamping, etc.  Golf balls that are rejected typically end up on driving ranges as part of the company’s range ball program.
  • Titleist makes different golf balls for different markets. For instance, they make the Titleist Prestige for Japan and China, a ball not sold here in the United States.
  • There are 17 golf balls out on the market from various manufacturers that are exactly the same, with the only difference being the name that is stamped on them.
  • Titleist has been the #1 ball in golf for 68 years.
  • Titleist has an impressive corridor of patents. Their most awarded patent holder has 9 short of Thomas Edison.

So which is the best golf ball for you? If you were to choose one of the 17 golf balls on the market which is essentially the same ball as mentioned above, there would be no difference. So why not choose a ball actually manufactured by the company that represents it? Our Members expect the best, and their choice of which golf ball to play should also be the best. Why sacrifice quality in the ball that you play? Choosing the number one golf ball for 68 years should be a no-brainer. So which ball is best for you? We obviously recommend the Pro V1 or Pro V1x, though other options are available if price is an issue. Stop in and ask a member of your Professional Staff and we can lead you towards selecting a ball that is best for your game.

During the month of October and into the first days of November, Petaluma celebrates El Día de los Muertos, a ritual celebration from México, Latin and South America in which the spirits of dead loved ones are invited to visit the living as honored guests.  The month long celebration has a few events you should put on your calendar:

Candlelight Procession with Giant Puppets

More information can be found on the El Dia de los Muertos Petaluma Facebook page.

Halloween Day celebrations begin early for the little ones.  Join over 60 participating Petaluma Downtown merchants for a fun and safe community Halloween for the entire family and goodies for costumed kids under 12.  Prepare for a hauntingly good time from 3 – 5:30pm on Monday October 31st.  There will be a map on their website the week before Halloween or you can just follow the orange and black balloons you’ll find around town. And when the sun goes down, it’s just a short walk to the residential Historic District where you will find a host of decorated homes and a very large gathering of trick-or-treaters.   D Street is the place to be on Halloween!

Happy Hauntings.
