Meet Rebekah Reynoso, Events Manager at Mayacama

Mayacama is the quintessential Wine Country experience, offering its members unparalleled services, amenities and events.  This effort is lead by the experienced team of Mayacama professionals. One team member with a passion for gatherings and festivities is Rebekah Reynoso, Events Manager at Mayacama. We recently asked Rebekah to share some insight, as well as some of her local favorites, with us.

Before I was Events Manager for Mayacama….
I have been in the food and beverage industry since I was 16-years-old. I started by working in various restaurants throughout Sonoma County and, since then, have had a passion for the hospitality industry. Now, I have been working at Mayacama Golf Club for 15 years! I love being able to create memorable experiences for our members.

Four reasons Mayacama’s site and location makes for a memorable event venue:
The beautiful olive trees in our courtyard.
The grounds of our golf course. We take great pride in our landscape it has established itself as our most popular backdrop.
Our back terrace that overlooks the grounds of our golf course.
The quietness of our property. As soon as you enter our gates it feels as if you have entered a private world. That reservation is refreshing.

My three favorite annual events held at Mayacama and why:
Patrick’s Day Four Ball – This event is the kick off to the tournament season and sets the tone for the year. It is a sold out event and I enjoy seeing all the players come in their best St. Patrick’s Day attire.
All Vintner Pour – This event is our most popular. We typically have up to 400 people sign up each year. I really enjoy the full set up – all the floral, linen, and décor creates such a memorable atmosphere for our members.
Women’s Member Guest Tournament – I love being able to see the women of Mayacama come out to play a two day tournament. We make it special by including luncheons, receptions, and special gifts for all the players.

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of the Mayacama community?
I think there are a lot of reasons that people choose to become a part of this community. Our golf course, to start, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and intrigues, regardless if you play or not. The social camaraderie – we hold so many special events for our members that offer an opportunity to meet new people. Our community is unique and compelling because we establish relationships with each member. For us, we take pleasure when they associate our club as home.

Locals know best. Share 3 of your favorite Annual Sonoma County events that members and guest’s should attend and why.
Annual DuMOL Wine Tasting – Fun.
Sonoma County Fair – Family.
Barrel Tasting – Memorable.

Current Addiction:
I would say my phone. All of my children are grown up and as a mom that is our number one source of communication.

5 things I can’t live without:
My friends, family, phone, wine, and coffee!

Best part of my job:
I love my team. I have a very dedicated crew that shows up to every event ready to work. They are self-motivated and dependable. They make event we have, member or private, run seamlessly.

Next spot on my travel itinerary:
Hawaii

Meet Brian Hill, Front Office Lead at Mayacama

Mayacama is the quintessential Wine Country experience, offering its members unparalleled services.  This effort is lead by the experienced team of Mayacama professionals. One team member with a wealth of local knowledge and passion for the region is Brian Hill, Front Office Lead at Mayacama. We recently asked Brian to share some insight, as well as some of his local favorites, with us.

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of the Mayacama community?

The most compelling reason I feel people want to be a part of this community is the people. Everyone here is here because they want to be; members guests and our employees. That is a big reason why the atmosphere at this club is so good. Everyone is happy and with a good attitude.

Something people may not know about Mayacama is:

Something you may not know about the club is that the land was originally owned by Charles Schultz. We also are in the top 100 of Golf Courses in America!

Favorite spot on the Mayacama course/why:
Favorite spot on the course is the 3rd . The third hole is nothing but great, after playing one and two you walk into a testy par 3 that is no break from the challenge of the start of the course. No matter what set of tees you are playing it is a challenge ranging from 129 to 178 yards. The carry is intimidating and you have to be able to trust your swing and your club selection in order to score on that hole. If confidence is an issue, a high number will more than likely be a result. It’s a signature golf hole and it’s also one of my favorites because I have my one and only hole in 1 on this hole!!

Favorite item on Chef Pikey’s menu:
The great thing about Mayacama, is that our Chef is constantly changing out menu throughout the seasons. I have been fortunate enough to try many amazing dishes throughout my time here. My favorite item is the cheeseburger – which is luckily, almost always on the menu. It’s thick, juicy and always cooked to the perfect temperature.

Favorite annual event at Mayacama/why:
My favorite annual event here at Mayacama would have to be our Easter Sunday festivities. Seeing the families all together, the kids happy and playing everywhere makes for a fantastic event. Our activities team hides around 5000 eggs for all the kids on the driving range and I think it takes the kids about 3 minutes to get them all!  There is also a beautiful brunch, a petting zoo and many activities for the kids in our courtyard.

Best spot to catch the sunset at Mayacama:
Our property consists of over 600 acres, so I feel like wherever you are the sunset is bound to be a special. But, my favorite place would be on the back terrace. The terrace faces a couple of holes on the course, and when the sun goes down it really makes me recognize the beauty of where I work.

Best month to visit/why:
The best month would have to be May. Every April, we go through an aeration which prepares our golf course for the upcoming season and is perfect by May! We host our All Vintner Pour , the second week of May, and it is our biggest event yet. 300 people come to the Pour that features all of our Vintner Members pouring their best wines! Also My favorite tournament, The Match Play Championships, is during this month! May really kick starts all these popular events and signifies the beginning of Summer – bringing out all of our members and their families.

Locals know best. Share 3 of your favorite spots around Sonoma County for members to get on their must visit list:
Valette– A fantastic restaurant in Healdsburg. Have to order the scallops!
32 Winds Winery– Our Vintner Member, Ed Mascarin, owns this boutique winery and the wines are just as fantastic as the property it is on.
Safari West– Safari West is a 400-acre private wildlife preserve located just 25 min from Mayacama. The selection of wildlife emphasizes species native to Africa, including giraffes, rhinoceros, cheetahs, and numerous species of birds. It is a fun place for the family to see animals, have a tour around the facility in a jeep, and even enjoy a nice stay on the property!

Lightning-round

If I wasn’t working you’d find me at: home with wife, son Brayden, daughter Ava while watching the Warriors or Giants!

Best part of my job: Co-Workers

Next spot on my travel itinerary: Hawaii

Meet Tim Hoffman, Director of Sales at Mayacama

Membership in a Private Residence Club, especially one of the quality of Mayacama, offers many benefits beyond those typical of second home ownership. At Mayacama, every residence is meticulously maintained and managed, removing all of the property management, maintenance and worries associated with second home ownership. Your only job as a Mayacama Member is to relax and enjoy your stay.

Tim Hoffman, Director of Sales at Mayacama, helps members obtain their goal of residential membership.  He recently took time to answer a few questions for us.

What was life like before becoming Director of Sales?
Before my business life, I was fortunate to travel the world representing my country through sport. For 13 years, I traveled internationally as a member of the US National Speed Skating Team, competing in many World Cups and World Championships, and was blessed to have the ability early in my career to become National Champion 4 times…prior to arthritis setting in and wheels falling off 😉 After retiring, I moved into sales, both residential and development real estate sales in Park City, UT. With neither my, or myself, skiing anymore…we moved to wine country to escape the winters, where I was fortunate to find a career here at Mayacama!

What do you find is the most compelling reason people choose to become part of the Mayacama community?
Each individual or family has something inherently unique that compels them to join. Notwithstanding the amazing beauty and ambiance of the topography and architectural design of Mayacama…when it comes down to it, the energy and the sense of belonging that our members and staff exude is perhaps the most compelling of all.

The 3 things that owners in the Residence Club are most surprised to discover at Mayacama are:
(1) The feeling that you are part of a family every time you visit. With members coming from everywhere across the country, Mayacama has become a second family for many!
(2) Although it sounds boring…Consistency. The way the club is managed, the food service and quality, the course maintenance and experience, etc… You know that every visit to Mayacama will be an extraordinary experience.
(3) Mayacama is not only for adults…our childrens’ programming is truly second to none which evidenced by this past Easter at the club!

3 favorite features of the Mayacama Villas: The Mayacama Villas will be the perfect meld between our Private Residence Club Membership and our Estate Home Ownership. Whereas there are many exciting benefits of Villa ownership, my 3 favorite features would be (1) the ever popular yet tastefully redesigned Harvest Room (2) True owner use flexibility and control in deciding when they will stay in their villa and when they will lease their villa back to the club (3) the ability to have a guarantee that 100% of the Villa costs (including property tax, utilities, insurance, reserves, maintenance, etc…) will be covered.

Locals know best. Describe a few destinations in Sonoma County that you’d recommend to guests.
Sonoma wine country has so much to offer from the Charles Shultz museum, to amazing wine tastings, to hiking trails or biking our country roads, or to visiting the coast. Over time, I believe members and guests should take the opportunity to visit as much of the area as they can. Our Vintner Members have some of the finest wineries around to visit, Healdsburg continues to offer more and more boutique shops, restaurants and tastings rooms, Safari West is an experience hard to find anywhere stateside. With the coming expansion the our local airport, and the additional airlines lining up to offer flights to and from…Sonoma County just beginning to take off!

Now for the Lightning Round.

Red or White: Red

Favorite spot on the Mayacama course: 15 tee box…that view is something else!

5 things I can’t live without: That’s easy…My wife, family & friends, traveling with any or all of them, BBQing on a warm summer night (or on cold blistery night for that matter)

Best part of my job: The ability to introduce and welcome many new Members to one of the finest private clubs in the world.

Next spot on my travel itinerary: a few of us old teammates are planning a trip through Europe, to tour our families around the cities and towns we competed in most often…cant wait! But before then…a quick trip to Wisconsin for a family reunion.

Thanks for taking the time out of busy schedule Tim!

Meet Adam Beattie, Restaurant Manager at Mayacama

Mayacama is more than just golf; it’s an entire lifestyle experience.  The restaurant at Mayacama offers a variety of dishes which change with the season.  Here you will find entrees which celebrate the bounty of local artisans, organically grown produce, locally raised meat and poultry, fresh caught seafood from the coast, all enhanced with fresh herbs from the chef ’s garden.

The dining rooms are always alive and spill from three separate dining rooms to wide terraces overlooking the golf course. Dinners can be enjoyed in the wine cellar or on its private patio. Whether formal or casual, Mayacama is recognized as one of the truly outstanding culinary programs in Wine Country.

Adam Beattie, Restaurant Manager at Mayacama, took time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions:

What does your background entail and how’d you land at Mayacama? Share your journey with us.

First, I fell in love with golf about 12 years ago.  I grew up playing baseball, basketball, football, and track.  If you had asked me 12 years ago and one day if I’d ever be a golfer, I would have laughed at you!  Transitioning into golf my first year or two was challenging to say the least.  I stuck with it, however, got some lessons and started to become good at it.  Soon after getting my handicap down to a 14, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Mayacama and play golf with a District Mgr. from Young’s Market.  I shot a 105 that day and was humbled.   It was the nicest golf course I had seen or played on; and I still feel the same way.  That was my introduction to Mayacama Golf Club.

As far as my restaurant background, I had the good fortune of growing up in Napa Valley, St. Helena specifically.  I’ve been in the restaurant business for over twenty years now.  I started my first job at fifteen years old at Tra Vigne restaurant.  I spent the next 14 years, through high school and college, working my way up from busser to Asst. General Manager.  The talented mentors and the rich food culture I was exposed to during that time built the foundation for my love of food and hospitality.  Considered one of the best restaurants in California at that time, we would serve over a thousand people a day were enjoying rustic Italian food like they had never tasted before in their lives and drinking fantastic wines -it was the place to be!   Another exciting part of working at an incredibly busy and successful restaurant was learning the business side of it.  I was taught very early that the business creates the art.  This meant that all the prime costs had to be in line daily (food, wine, labor, and liquor) in order for us to run a financially sound restaurant.  Once I left Tra Vigne, I spent the next six years at some excellent restaurants, including Farmstead, Bottega, and Cook.  I then moved to Healdsburg in the winter of 2015 and did some consulting for a few small businesses’ for a year before I came across a job opening at Mayacama on line.  I submitted my resume and had an interview two days later.  It has been almost a year now, and I still feel extremely fortunate to be a part of this team.

What are 3 things that you strive for in terms of the quality at the restaurant?

A staff that is friendly, informed, and genuinely wants to serve their guests/members.  Coaching the staff through competence and compassion are keys to that success.

We have to have products we can support and believe in as a staff.  Chef’s delicious food and our exceptional wine list make that easy.  Not to mention the view we have from the Bar & Grill every day!

Ongoing education about food, wine, and service at daily line ups are a must.  We live in one of the top food and wine meccas of the world, continued education is vital!

The menus are known for being approachable, local and responsibly sourced. Name a few of your favorite (and customers’ favorite) locally sourced brands used at Mayacama:

Preston Farms Produce & Lamb

KJ Farms

Bellwether Farms

Full Belly Farms

Akaushi Beef

David Little’s Potatoes

Old Redwood Beer

And of course, Greg Hauck’s Garden Produce!

What are the 3 most ordered dishes at Mayacama?

Burrata, Our Burger & Crispy Chicken

Do you ever get special requests or requests to bring back a certain menu item?

Our members stick with what’s offered on our seasonal menus most of the time, but when they do have special requests, Chef Pikey & his team are always accommodating.

The menu items guests request the most when it is off season are the Fish Tacos, Pork Cheek Sugo, Short Ribs, and the Old School Cobb Salad.

Name your 3 personal favorite Sonoma County restaurants and your go-to order item at each:

Diavola – Linguine with Clams & Squid or the Cha Cha Cha Pizza (Smoked Pork Belly, Roasted Red Peppers, Goat Cheese, Onions).

Hana Sushi – Any of Chef’s Nigiri (Favorites our Spanish Mackeral, Ikura, & Fluke).

Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar – A dozen Kushi Oysters and a Lobster Roll with an ice cold Trumer Pilsner (Always those 3 things  J).

Lightning Round:

My favorite Mayacama dish:   Any of Chef’s Seasonal Sashimi
If I’m not in the kitchen you’ll find me:   On the golf course
If I wasn’t a Restaurant Manager, I’d be a:   Museum Curator
Person I’d most like to dine with us at Mayacama:  Rory McIlroy
Guilty Pleasure:   Pasta
3 Favorite Travel Destinations:   Kaui, Yosemite, and Point Reyes/Inverness on the Coast

Thanks Adam.  We appreciate you taking the time to share your insight.

Members and their guests share their personal Mayacama experiences:

“My girlfriend and I had a beautiful stay at Mayacama this past weekend! The facilities and faculty were both worth 5 stars each!! We did everything from tennis to hiking to biking to working out in the gym, all complimented with really tasty food and drinks. The fish tacos were some of the best I’ve ever had! It was peaceful and comfortable. Can’t wait until our next stay!!” – Katie B. Santa Barbara

“This facility really is as good as it gets…Private jet to Santa Rosa, picked-up by the awesome Mayacama staff and on the golf course in less than 30 minutes after landing.  The food is incredible and I’ve never seen a better wine cellar.  The golf course is always in perfect shape and it’s a fun layout as well as a workout (no carts)….”  – Mic H. Huntington Beach

“My family and I are members of Mayacama. We enjoy the course, the people, the wine, and food that they provide. It’s a wonderful environment to be in. It’s a very elite country club and no other club can compete with them. The Spa is also very relaxing and provide great services. I always enjoy my time there, especially since the views are amazing.” – Bianca W. Healdsburg

“My family and I felt lucky to have stayed at the property for 4 days. The grounds, rooms, staff, food, drinks, and golf were all amazing. It’s really the little things that are done so well (cocktails are made by hand with top shell spirits, the caddies at the course take pride in helping you get the most out of your round, the staff has in general a family persona, etc). A truly amazing experience!” – Donovan S. Irvine

5 Golf Gifts to Get on Your List

With our Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf course as the centerpiece of Mayacama living, golfers experience the game as it was meant to be played. Of the 200 courses that carry his name, this is among Jack’s very best, where deep green fairways snake though golden valleys and oak-studded hills. It’s a pleasure, as well as a passion, to play the game at Mayacama.

With the recent re-grassing of the course, everyone is gearing up for some of the best golf in the country.  We thought it was a good time to re-purpose some sage advice regarding equipment offered in our recent newsletter.

Golf Ball Facts & Fiction
Common among golf ball manufacturers are the claims that no other ball flies farther, rolls out longer, spins more, putts truer, on and on and on! But what really are the facts?

Mayacama Golf Club’s First Assistant Professional Andrew Black recently had a first-hand look when he was invited to tour the Titleist Golf Ball Plant while attending a Future Leaders Conference at the Titleist Headquarters in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Here are some of the facts (and myths) that he learned while touring Ball Plant III, which manufactures the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1X Golf Balls. But beware … these findings may shock you!

  • There are only THREE golf companies who actually manufacture their own golf balls … Titleist, Bridgestone, and Srixon. All other golf balls are manufactured at a handful of golf ball factories located outside the United States.
  • Because Titleist makes their own golf ball, they are able to monitor each step of the process from start to finish.  Due to their checks and balances only 1 in 1,000,000 golf balls are returned.
  • Titleist not only rigorously examines their own golf balls, but does so to their competitor’s ball as well.  Titleist purchases 6 dozen of every new golf ball that enters the market to test, analyze, and study their competitor’s product.
  • These studies show how their own quality control is second to none because they have their own employees making and examining their golf balls.  Through Titleist’s checks and balances, more golf balls are rejected than actually make it to the market place.  Flaws that disqualify a ball are minimal, usually off-center stamping, etc.  Golf balls that are rejected typically end up on driving ranges as part of the company’s range ball program.
  • Titleist makes different golf balls for different markets. For instance, they make the Titleist Prestige for Japan and China, a ball not sold here in the United States.
  • There are 17 golf balls out on the market from various manufacturers that are exactly the same, with the only difference being the name that is stamped on them.
  • Titleist has been the #1 ball in golf for 68 years.
  • Titleist has an impressive corridor of patents. Their most awarded patent holder has 9 short of Thomas Edison.

So which is the best golf ball for you? If you were to choose one of the 17 golf balls on the market which is essentially the same ball as mentioned above, there would be no difference. So why not choose a ball actually manufactured by the company that represents it? Our Members expect the best, and their choice of which golf ball to play should also be the best. Why sacrifice quality in the ball that you play? Choosing the number one golf ball for 68 years should be a no-brainer. So which ball is best for you? We obviously recommend the Pro V1 or Pro V1x, though other options are available if price is an issue. Stop in and ask a member of your Professional Staff and we can lead you towards selecting a ball that is best for your game.

Fall is a special time of year in Wine Country.  The changing of the seasons ushers in the harvest and the skies are alight with spectacular sunsets and sunrises throughout the region.  From local Mayacama experiences to a day trip through Wine County, we encourage those on Instagram to capture and share their Wine Country experiences with us.  Follow us on Instagram as we showcase Mayacama and the spectacular region we are fortunate to call “Home”.  The beauty of the region awaits so grab those phones and cameras and click away.

Here are a few regional Instagrams which caught our eye this October.  They really capture the essence of Wine Country….great shots all!
